Here's hoping that your closing days are years away

That mundanity in rich abundance comes your way

And that "nothing lasts" are simply words that fall

Giving way to the memory of a well-lived life, a gift to all

Your prayer prompts an awareness in me that this is how we should be living today, as if our closing days might be imminent.

I'm reminded of these lines from Virgil: "Death plucks my ear and says, 'Live—I am coming.'"

In good company U.S. Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. used a translation of these words during a radio address on his 90th birthday in 1931
